Curriculum Statement
At Crudwell Church of England Primary School, we have developed an exciting and challenging curriculum that will equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding that they will need to lead happy, successful lives beyond primary school.
Our school vision is to ensure that everyone has the 'roots to grow and wings to fly'. It is inspired by Psalm 1 and Isaiah 40:30-31.
Psalm 1 – ‘They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do.’
Isaiah 40:30-31 – ‘Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’
Roots and wings. We need them both. The roots of our community that nurture and help us grow to be the best possible versions of ourselves. The wings of faith that allow us to soar freely into the future.
Our vision is integral to the design of our curriculum at Crudwell Church of England Primary School.
Our school values, based on Christian teaching, are: Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, Trust, Teamwork and Creativity. Through these values we strive to develop character and inspire everyone to achieve in a happy, fun and safe environment. This journey is summarised in our school motto: 'Learn, Create, Laugh, Grow'.
These values are encouraged and celebrated in school through our curriculum and distinctively Christian ethos.
The Big Ideas woven through our adapted Cornerstones curriculum ensure that our pupils experience a rich and diverse diet of exciting and meaningful learning that develops rounded children; personally, socially, spiritually and academically. We have carefully crafted our curriculum to make the most of local, regional and national opportunities to achieve this aim.
We teach the full range of National Curriculum subjects through our topics, giving the children plenty of opportunities to apply what they have learnt in English and maths in these subjects too. We are committed to enriching our pupil’s lives through the wider curriculum. For example, in music, we teach first access ukuleles and offer peripatetic lessons in drums, piano, guitar and brass. We also perform in regional and national music festivals each year (WOMAD).
We recognise the importance and positive impact that nature has on the well-being and mental health of our young people; all classes attend Forest School onsite and in a local woodland throughout the year and we are an OPAL school – providing space, resources and time for quality play outside.PE and Sport also have a huge contribution to the well-being and character of our pupils and as part of the Malmesbury cluster we take part in sporting festivals throughout the year, including gymnastics, rugby, cricket and swimming.
We believe everyone ‘can do maths’ and are committed to developing the pupil’s mathematical competence and confidence as crucial for their futures. As part of the Mobius hub, we have developed a maths mastery approach to teaching maths that stretches and challenges our pupils in reasoning and problem solving too, linking this to other curriculum areas of computing and science too.
We believe that reading and developing a love of reading is crucial for children to become successful writers and learners. Our school staff are all trained in teaching phonics to our pupils from day 1 with Read, Write, Inc. and our pupils quickly learn to be successful readers, sharing the sounds they have learnt through our physical and online libraries of books, with parents and carers at home. This in turn supports the pupils spelling and writing development. We have carefully selected high quality texts that support our topics and will engage and challenge pupils, developing their vocabulary, comprehension, and enjoyment of reading. In addition to this, each term, pupils will share a class story that stretches and develops not only their reading skills but crucially their imaginations and language too. In 2023, we redesigned and built our beautiful new school library, complete with a reading tree house! We also often enjoy visits from well-known authors and are always looking to find exciting ways to inspire a love of reading in all of our pupils.
